about me

counsellor/psychotherapist - facilitator - clinical supervisor - trainer

Hi. Welcome to the 'Healing the Head' website. I'm Gill Sweeting, and on this page, you will find a little about me. I realise that it feels awkward to buy products and services or even download freebies from someone you don't know much about. When I am in your position, I want to know that the person helping me is credible. So, here's something about my background, my experience, and my story. Am I credible? You decide!

what I do

my life's work

the summary version

I am a psychotherapist, working in private practice, alongside supervising and teaching. This suits me better than my first career in business consultancy. I love my work, helping clients to navigate their difficulties. Additional training I have taken along the way qualifies me to be both a psychosexual therapist and an EMDR therapist.

how I got here

my life's work

the longer version

1st career

my business background

In my first career, as a business analyst and then consultant, I helped organisations transform their operations. I worked with people from frontline services, back offices, management, and executives. This is where I honed my interpersonal skills and developed a profound interest in the intricacies of human behaviour, particularly how people think, feel, and behave in the ways they do.

building a 2nd career

my training

Building on my honours degree in psychology, I have had five significant courses of study that qualify me for the work I do today.

I studied for a Diploma in Integrative Psychotherapeutic Practice at the Northern Guild for Psychotherapy and ELAN, Training and Development. This is my core training and provides the backbone for my work. With the knowledge and skills gained here, I began to see clients in 2005.

A little later, I had the opportunity to teach counselling while gaining the qualification to do so at the University of Derby. I collected my Professional Graduate Diploma for Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector in 2009.

I qualified to supervise other counsellors in 2012, after studying for the Post-Graduate Certificate in Counsellor Supervision at York St John University.

Recognising the increasing prevalence of sexual issues in my client base, I committed to further educating myself. In 2017, I gained a Diploma in Integrative Psychosexual Therapy from London's Centre for Psychosexual Health, demonstrating my dedication to staying informed and competent in my field.

My final tranche of training has been on the use of EMDR to support clients with the safe therapeutic processing of traumatic and difficult formative experiences. This training has significantly enhanced my ability to help clients process and overcome their traumatic experiences.

a career that fits me

my practice

In my professional practice, I use various skills across three principal roles. I guide my trainees to enhance their competence and confidence. I assist my supervisees in developing their expertise and working ethically and effectively. Most importantly, I play a pivotal role in helping my clients transform their lives. In all three roles, I love to facilitate a process of growth.

My brain is naturally drawn to analysing complex issues, spotting themes, and solving puzzles. However, my deep compassion fuels my work, compelling me to understand others sufficiently well to help them become the best versions of themselves.
